At the end of March 2010, Red Hat released RHEL 5.5. Since then, I’ve been working actively on the creation of the upcoming CentOS LiveCD 5.5. The most notable changes in this release are:

  • Persistence feature: with livecd-tools 014-7 and later, it is possible to create a LiveUSB media featuring a persistent overlay
  • OpenOffice.org 3.1.1: support for files created with Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc)
  • Improved wireless network adapter drivers: better support for Intel Wireless devices
  • ext4 support: ext4 partitions of your system should now be detected automatically by the LiveCD

A size constraint of 700MB has been respected for both i386 and x86_64 iso images. Users who want to burn the LiveCD iso images to regular CD medias will be able to do so.

However, transferring the LiveCD iso image to a USB key is the preferred method. Boot time is significantly reduced on a USB key. Moreover, the persistence feature is only available for LiveUSB medias.

Customization

As usual, the CentOS LiveCD 5.5 can be customized in order to support additional features:

  • NTFS support
  • Additional packages
  • Additional services (httpd, mysql, bind, etc.)
  • Custom configurations
  • Localization
  • etc.

  • When we use you livecd script to make a centos 5.5 installable LiveCD we got an error message:

    How can we solve it?

  • The packages required to enable the ability to install the OS contained on the LiveCD directly to the hard drive are unsupported. I made them several months ago for the CentOS 5.2 release and I did not update them afterwards.

However, this feature will be included in the upcoming CentOS LiveCD 6.0 release. See my post about RHEL6 beta LiveCD. If you are able to wait until this release, you will have the ability to install directly from the LiveCD.

  • Now I have a RAID-50 (8 SAS disks 140Gb each), with CentOS, from an HP server with fried motherboard. Can I use the live CD to virtually reconstruct the array? Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!

  • To reconstruct the array, you will need a new server with an identical RAID controller. I would then use the RAID controller utility to reconstruct the array. This utility can usually be launched during the BIOS startup and does not require an operating system to be loaded on the server.
